Boatmen’s Bank was founded in St. Louis in 1847 and claimed to be the oldest bank west of the Mississippi River. According to company legend, the bank was founded to help the working class, many of whom worked on the riverboats. In 1996, it was purchased by NationsBank (now Bank of America) for 9.6 billion.
