The people of Cherokee have spoken!  Introducing the winner of the Cherokee Street Flag competition!  Congrats to designers Ryan Reed and Laura Davis, who offer this thoughtful description of the flag's symbolism:

The field is composed of two horizontal bars of yellow over red with a large white seven pointed star in the center.  The horizontal bars of yellow and red represent the Cherokee Street car line.  A street car line was established on Cherokee during the early 1890's transforming the remote and sparsely residential street into a substantial commercial district.  Due to the various street car lines in St. Louis, street cars were given flags to identify particular lines.  The Cherokee Street Line carried and half yellow half red flag.

The seven pointed star is a traditional symbol used by the Cherokee Nation to represent the seven separate tribes that create the Cherokee.  The typical depiction of a Cherokee Indian, an southeastern nation, has been a Central Plains Native American man.  The seven pointed star was chosen as an acknowledgment of the name sake of our street using a design accepted by the Cherokee as a symbol of their nation.

The flag design is purposely simplistic.  Rather than using several designs representing the array of cultures and diversity on Cherokee within the flag, the flag is meant to be a singular and instantly recognizable logo of the distinctive elements of our street.
