If SLU wants to tear it down, they own it so they can TEAR IT DOWN! Certainly some things need to be preserved, but it is time out for eccentrics crying "foul" everytime somebody tries to do something positive for the LOU. Clean around your own front yard,
your neighbor and your block can stand a mighty bit of improving!!! SLU has been a good community partner! It is time for St. Louis to get rid of this backwards thinking attitude. Yes, we need to preserve, but sometimes it is time to stop hugging bricks and
grab hold of the future!!!

It's their building. SLU has been a good community partner. Tell your neighbor to clean up. Yes the city belongs to all of us, but you can't tell another man how to arrange the furniture in HIS house. Enough of you guy's whining. St. Louis desperately
needs to move forward.

The Pevely complex is on the National Register of Historic Places, meaning its significance goes far beyond St. Louis. It is the last remaining historic building at a very prominent intersection and is completely viable and ready for rehab. As recently
as 3 months ago, it was slated to be renovated for apartments, so the argument that it can't be reused is absolutely false. When we tear down the buildings that make our city distinctive, we tear away at our potential. The easy way to redevelop land is not
always the best way. Look at the Fox Theatre, the Peabody (Kiel) Opera House, the Continental Building, City Museum, and hundreds of other historic buildings around the city that were once deemed obsolete and in danger of demolition. They have been reclaimed
and now contribute to the cultural fabric of our city. That's what a little imagination can do. As for SLU, we encourage them to grow and realize that they are huge stakeholders in the future of the city. However, that doesn't give them a carte blanche to
impose their vision of what the city should look like without checks and balances. SLU has destroyed literally dozens upon dozens of buildings over the years, which has left gaping holes in the urban fabric of Midtown. There is a better way. St. Louis is not
beholden to SLU. There is plenty of room on the Pevely site to build a new doctor's building without having to take down that corner building and smokestack. Our neighbor across the street (I assume you mean South Side Garden Stop) is mentally ill and owns
his own building. The neighborhood association has contacted the city about his code violations a number of times and apparently he's in compliance. That's not really something we can control. The Pevely is a different story, thanks to its National Historic
Register listing. We have a chance to save that building.
